Jenna’s Blog: Non Profits / Community Engagement

Here in Springfield, we have no shortage of amazing non-profit and social service organizations that need a variety of skill sets and experience levels to fulfill their missions. No matter how much (or how little) time you can contribute, know that it is needed and valued! One of the easiest resources for potential volunteers is United Way of Central Illinois’ Volunteer Site.

If there’s an event you love to attend, why not spend a couple hours working a shift at the beer tent or in the Kids Area? Most of the time you’ll get a free t-shirt, a couple drinks, and some food as thanks for your work. I’ve also made many friends while checking IDs and wrangling children. Events like the Capital City Celebration, Juneteenth, Legacy of Giving, and the Old Capitol Art Fair simply wouldn’t happen without volunteers from the community. For something more athletically oriented, check out the upcoming Fight for Air Climb or one of the many races put on by local groups.

If you’re one of those that likes to just “do stuff”, there are some great organizations that could use your help. One of my favorite places is HSHS Mission Outreach, where volunteers sort and package donated medical supplies to be sent to developing countries. You could also help make dog toys at the Animal Protective League, package harm reduction kits with the Phoenix Center, or put together safe sex kits with 5th Street Renaissance. For the culinary-inclined, groups like The Outlet or the Ronald McDonald House are always in need of a hot meal.

For those who want to network and serve on a more regular basis, there are membership based organizations. The Springfield Jaycees are the local chapter of the world’s greatest organization for young people (age 18-40), and have been creating positive change here since 1929 with projects like the Holiday Lights Parade. Rotary International and Kiwanis are similar  without the age limits. The Coalition of Rainbow Alliances (CORAL) is a local organization that is free to join and supports the LGBTQAI+ community.

One of the most misunderstood areas of the nonprofit world is Boards of Directors. Social service agencies and most nonprofits in general are run by volunteer Boards of Directors. Boards are responsible for things like building purchases, fundraising, determining bonuses, and overall supporting the paid staff at the agency. Your best bet here is to either reach out to an agency directly, or by checking the United Way page linked at the top of this blog.

If you still can’t decide how you want to help, just follow your favorite organizations on social media. Their needs are usually communicated in a variety of ways.

Happy Volunteering!
