Some faith-based organizations and community groups around the state are calling on Illinois prosecutors to drop their legal challenges to the law that will end cash bail in the state on January 1st.

Nearly 60 state’s attorneys… including Dan Wright in Sangamon County… have filed suit contending that the Pretrial Fairness Act portion of the SAFE-T Act is unconstitutional because it takes away a judge’s discretion in setting bail. Those cases have been consolidated into a single lawsuit, with arguments scheduled to be heard Tuesday in Kankakee County.

Groups including the Faith Coalition for the Common Good in Springfield say ending cash bail will create a more equitable justice system in Illinois, and are urging the state’s attorneys to end their challenge. Wright declined to comment on the groups’ statement.
