One of the state’s major teachers’ unions is objecting to a proposal to add more standardized testing to the school calendar in Illinois.

The State Board of Education proposal would change the yearly “high-stakes” assessment exam for elementary and high school students to a series of three “interim” tests to measure progress over the course of the school year.

The Illinois Federation of Teachers says such standardized testing takes away valuable classroom time and does little to make either teaching or learning more effective.
