A leading measure of Illinois’s economic strength has hit its highest level since before the start of the pandemic in 2020.

The University of Illinois Flash Index climbed to 106.1 in March, its best showing since 2015. The index measures economic activity by examining corporate earnings, consumer spending, and personal income. Any reading over 100 signals growth, and the bigger the number, the faster the rate of growth.

U of I economists say tax revenues were up across the board compared to March of 2021, despite various headwinds including inflation, the war in Ukraine, and lingering concerns about COVID.
