The Spaulding village board has rejected a proposal to disband the village police department and turn patrol responsibilities over to Riverton.

Spaulding Mayor Bill Hinkle had pushed for the move, saying it would save Spaulding taxpayers $100,000 a year and provide round-the-clock police coverage of the village, something he says it doesn’t have right now. But a number of village residents spoke out against the move, and some board members say they were blindsided by the proposal.

Even though Spaulding will retain its police department, Hinkle says the village’s only full-time officer has already been hired by Riverton.
