Mental Health Monday: Your Anxiety Is Unique To You [VIDEO]

Mental Health Monday

Anxiety is different for everybody. I think the older generations tend to lump it all together, which you can’t really blame them for – it just wasn’t talked about in older days like it is now.

I know the way I experience my anxiety is only how I experience it – and the same goes for everyone else who experiences depression and anxiety. Also, this is another reason I always think therapy is so good and positive; it’s nice to understand how your stressors are unique to you.

In face, I have a story that perfectly illustrates this point.

I was recently in a pretty bad car accident coming back to Springfield from the Twin Cities, where I had to be for a funeral. Unfortunately, I was unknowingly driving into a winter storm warning on my way through Wisconsin….I should’ve known.

The tundra…

After I experienced something that was totally out of control, my car ended up in a ditch upside down. It was pretty shocking, but all in all, I felt good about not needing any medical care. Sure, the car is most likely totaled, but I’m not.

A lot of people in my circle have been reaching out to make sure I’m OK, which makes sense as I’ve been open about my anxiety through the years. The funny thing is I don’t really feel affected by the accident at all. Will it make me more aware and careful? It already has. However, in terms of worrying about it happening again, I don’t feel any different than before.

Now, you put me in an awkward social situation, or a something I feel like I can’t walk away from circumstance – like a haircut – and I melt. It’s so funny. A circumstance that should seemingly have a great affect on me hasn’t, whereas other things that don’t give people any anxiety tend to still make my anxiety peak.

Remember, don’t expect others always to understand why you are having a panic attack or are stressed. It’s different for everyone, and just because your anxiety might not make sense to friends of yours doesn’t make it less valid.

As per usual, I am here for you if you ever need to talk. Email me at Rocki@wnns.com, and I will get back to you as soon as I can! You are not alone.
