Mental Health Monday: Social Media [VIDEO]

Mental Health Monday

Happy Mental Health Monday!

This week, we’re talking a bit about the seemingly omnipresent Social Media. It did a very good job at creeping its way into our lives and laying an unshakable foundation, right underneath our feet. Before we knew it, Social Media became what it is today – an almost alternate reality where most people spend the majority of their time.

I was just recording a podcast episode around mental health and social media. I sat down with the Executive Medical Director of Behavioral Health for Blue Cross Blue Shield of IL. We had a great discussion about the” goods and bads” of social media in the context of mental health. After the 30 minute interview, I asked if he had social media – his answer was no.

To me, this is the only information I need.

We need to watch how much time we spend on different social platforms – for a multitude of reasons. The biggest being, the fact that it makes us compare ourselves with others constantly. This is problematic because people only tend to post their best selves online. We think they’re living these unbelievable lives, when in reality, it’s extremely curated.

The biggest and best advice I can give is to simply turn off your notifications. This means, every time you get a like or a repost, the platform won’t let you know, so you won’t immediately go on to check it out. This is a great way to start limiting your screen time on a daily basis. Also, it allows you to maybe forget about social media from time to time throughout the day.

As per usual, if you feel like you have no one to talk to – I’m here to remind you, you do. Email me for anything at any time. My address is Rocki@WNNS.com. Have a great day, and remember you are not alone!

Enjoy this week’s happy fun time video, below!
