Criminal penalty enhancements for gun crimes passed during the Bruce Rauner administration may be expiring soon.

A law sponsored by then-Sen. Kwame Raoul and supported by Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson established higher minimum prison terms for certain gun crimes.

After passage, the Illinois Sentencing Policy Advisory Council says that sentence lengths increased and the odds of a gun crime defendant spending more than six years in jail tripled. However, gun crime did not fall appreciably.

Those sentence enhancements are set to expire at the end of the year unless the General Assembly renews them.
