Medicare officials are beginning to negotiate lower drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, at least one of which is resisting in court.

Medicare had previously been prohibited from interfering with pricing decisions between manufacturers and pharmacies on the grounds that such negotiations interfered with the companies’ patent rights.

Pharmaceutical giant Merck has filed a lawsuit against the federal government to protect pricing on drugs to treat diabetes and other chronic diseases.
