Beginning on January 1, customers of Illinois restaurants and other food retailers will be specifically allowed to bring refillable containers to take home their purchases.

The measure is expected to reduce waste caused by single-use containers and bags.

Containers must be sanitary, smooth, durable, and easy to clean. Retailers will be authorized to fill customer containers with either ready-to-eat or bulk food items.
