Under a new Illinois law, all landlords across the state will be required to provide tenants with a written statement of damages within 30 days of their departure.

Without doing so, the landlord will not be entitled to withhold any of a tenant’s security deposit.

The previous law on the books only applied to landlords of buildings containing five or more units.

The new law will take effect on January 1, 2024.
