In the fight to prevent opioid overdoses around Springfield and Illinois in general, a new state law will look to expand access to overdose prevention supplies.

Currently, only pharmacists, physicians, advanced practice registered nurses, and physician assistants or their designees are authorized to dispense “adulterant testing supplies.”

But H.B. 1121 allows for trained overdose responders to legally dispense testing supplies as well.

The aim is to prevent people from unknowingly doing drugs laced with fentanyl by making testing supplies more readily available to whoever needs them.

The new law is set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2024.
