A practical and commercial innovation that began during the COVID pandemic will stay in place for at least the next five years.

Governor JB Pritzker has signed legislation that will allow restaurants and bars to continue to sell single-serve wine and alcoholic beverages for carryout, curbside pickup, and delivery through August 2028.

The “cocktails to go” policy was first put in place to help establishments make up some of the revenue they lost when in-person dining and drinking was shut down during the pandemic.

Various restrictions, however, do remain in place; the drinks must be in sealed, tamper-evident containers with the contents labeled, and must be transported in the trunk or a rear compartment of the vehicle that’s not readily accessible to the passenger area.
