Springfield aldermen and women are being asked to give emergency approval to an ordinance accepting a $3 million state grant for a variety of police department needs.

The grant through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity takes effect July 1, which is why fast approval is being sought.

The money would be allocated for a number of programs, including expanding the territory covered by ShotSpotter by two additional square miles, expanding the body-worn camera program to meet requirements of the state SAFE-T Act, adding a “fair and impartial policing” component to officer training, and funding a number of community outreach events.

Aldermen will vote on the ordinance Tuesday night.
