The Sangamo Club in Springfield announces it’s closing up this Friday for good

A downtown Springfield institution is closing its doors for good. The Sangamo Club has operated as a premier private dining and meeting facility downtown since the 1890s.

Its membership has included some of the most influential and well-known names in Springfield. But in recent years, declining membership, fewer workers downtown, and the effects of the COVID pandemic have all hampered the club’s operations.

For months, the club has unsuccessfully sought a buyer for its location on East Adams, with an eye toward possible relocation.

But no buyer was found, and club president Jim Ackerman says Friday will be the Sangamo Club’s last day of operations.
