It didn’t take long for summer travel to send gas prices heading back higher.

Prices have jumped dramatically around Illinois in the past week, with the average price for regular unleaded in Springfield climbing to $3.70 a gallon, up more than 22 cents from a week ago.

The statewide average stands at $3.98 a gallon, up 11 cents in the past week. But Triple A says crude oil prices have held steady, giving hope that gas prices will level off soon.

It’s still a much better picture than this time last year, when gas prices hit an all-time high of $5.27 a gallon locally.
