Governor JB Pritzker says he and Democratic legislative leaders have reached an agreement in principle on a new state budget.

Pritzker says the spending plan is balanced and responsible, pays down the state’s debt, and funds improved access to child care, early childhood education, and higher education.

One sticking point was the soaring cost of health care for undocumented people living in Illinois. Pritzker, for his part, says the budget deal sets up a way to “manage” the program within budget constraints but did not offer additional specifics.

Senate President Don Harmon and House Speaker Chris Welch say they are aiming to get the budget passed by this Friday.
