With Memorial Day approaching, state officials are reminding you of the importance of safe – and sober – boating.

This week is National Safe Boating Week, marking the unofficial start of summertime water activities.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says the two main factors to keep in mind are to wear life jackets while on any kind of watercraft, and to never operate watercraft while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

There were 52 reportable boating accidents on Illinois waterways last year, resulting in six deaths and 40 injuries.
