The former head of Springfield’s public library says Mayor Misty Buscher had every right to let her go, but thinks in the future, an independent library board – not politicians – should choose the library director.

That’s just one of the changes Summer Griffith thinks should be made after her one-year tenure as director came to an end this week.

Griffith says she never met one-on-one with Buscher and was given no reason for her dismissal.

Appearing live on WMAY, Griffith said it would be better for the library board to have the power to hire and fire the director, which she says is how most public libraries operate.

Griffith also disputes the idea that the library could have lost out on grants if she remained as director, because she doesn’t have a library sciences degree.

Buscher had raised that concern publicly, but Griffith says she’s not aware of any grants with that requirement.
