Illinoisans are expected to hit the road for Memorial Day weekend in numbers not seen since before the pandemic.

Triple A estimates more than two million Illinoisans will travel 50 miles or more from home over Memorial Day, a number just shy of the record high set in 2019.

More than 1.8 million of those travelers will get to their destination by car, while 107,000 will travel by air. Travel by other forms of transportation, including bus and train, is expected to be up 20% over 2022.

While Triple A says it’s too soon to know if recent declines in gas prices will continue heading into the holiday, prices should remain well below the record highs seen across the state in late May and early June of last year.
