Illinois State Police are investigating a shooting in Southern Illinois that left a suspect dead and a state trooper seriously wounded.

A trooper stopped to help a stranded motorist around 3 am Tuesday on Interstate 64 near Mount Vernon; there were two people in the vehicle, a 23-year-old male from Albuquerque and a female passenger.

A second trooper arrived on scene to assist, but shortly afterward, an altercation broke out and gunfire was exchanged. The driver of the car was fatally shot, and one of the troopers sustained wounds that were serious, but not life-threatening.

The passenger and the other trooper were not hurt; State Police Internal Investigations is now looking into the incident.
