A new study finds that most students who begin their higher education at a community college fail to obtain a bachelor’s degree within six years – but the head of the Illinois Community College Board says that doesn’t reflect reality in Illinois.

The data from the National Student Clearinghouse suggests that many students run into problems transferring their community college credits to a four-year institution, adding years and additional cost to their pursuit of a degree.

But appearing on WMAY, Brian Durham with the community college board says Illinois does a good job of transferring general education credits.

However, the board is pushing legislation that would require four-year schools to accept direct transfer credits for classes within the student’s chosen major.
