U.S. Senator Durbin of Illinois says SCOTUS needs ethics rule innovations

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says there must be changes to the ethics rules that govern the U.S. Supreme Court – even if the high court refuses to participate in making those changes.

Durbin issued a statement after Chief Justice John Roberts rejected his invitation to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which Durbin chairs.

Durbin plans a hearing for next week to discuss unreported financial favors and benefits received by Justice Clarence Thomas – and a similar story that surfaced this week about Justice Neil Gorsuch.

Durbin says the Supreme Court is held to a lower ethical standard than any other court, or any other branch of government, and says that must change; Durbin says the hearing will go on as planned May 2, even without Roberts.
