Alderman McMenamin tells WMAY that it wouldn’t be such a great loss if the developers don’t meet their 90-day deadline to break ground on the complex

A vocal critic of the proposed sports complex in Springfield says it wouldn’t be such a great loss if the developers don’t meet their 90-day deadline to break ground on the complex.

Ward 7 Alderman Joe McMenamin made the comment live Wednesday on WMAY; McMenamin says the city is committing too much tax revenue to help the developers of the project – and says that money could be better spent to improve the downtown area and gateways to the city.

Supporters of the planned Scheels Sports Park say the developers will only get that money if they succeed in generating even more tax revenue for the city, and insist the project would be a net positive for the city’s coffers.

Mayor Jim Langfelder has signed a revised development agreement for the complex, but as of midday Wednesday, the developers had not.

Once they do, they will have 90 days to break ground. If they don’t, the deal can be called off.
