The numbers are in from last weekend’s “Drug Takeback Day” through the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office.

The office accepts medications that are expired or no longer needed so that they can be disposed of safely.

Unwanted medicines should not be kept around the house where someone could get into them improperly, but also cannot be disposed of in the trash, because they can cause contamination.

Sheriff Jack Campbell says his office has collected more than 50 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter medications in recent months, but took in more than 60 pounds last Saturday alone during the Takeback Day event.
