Gas prices are inching downward in Springfield, but it’s not clear yet if the trend will continue.

Triple A says the average price for regular unleaded locally is down five cents from a week ago, to $3.78 a gallon.

That’s the lowest price among major metro areas around the state, one cent cheaper than Bloomington-Normal. Crude oil prices fell last week after several weeks of increases; Triple A says if that continues, motorists could see more relief at the pump in the days ahead.

The statewide average Monday was just under $4.07 a gallon, virtually unchanged from a week ago.
