WMAY’s Last Night-in-Sports Report: 04/17/2023

Patrick Wisdom and Cody Bellinger went back to back in the top of the 6th inning and the Chicago Cubs would hold on for a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers in LA yesterday afternoon. Dansby Swanson chipped in offensively for the Cubs with three hits in the contest. Drew Smyly picked up the win on the mound, and Brad Boxberger worked a scoreless 9th to earn his 1st save of the season; the Cubs are in Oakland tonight to start a series with the A’s.

The Chicago White Sox scored 4 runs in the first inning and then were held scoreless for the rest of the game being doubled up by the Baltimore Orioles at the Rate; 8-4 was the final. Aaron Bummer took the loss in relief for the Sox. Gavin Sheets homered and drove in 3 of the Sox 4 runs. Sox host the Philadelphia Phillies tonight at the Rate.

It took two runs in the bottom of the 10thinning for the St. Louis Cardinals to get a 5-4 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. Tommy Edman provided the game-winning hit for the Cards. Lars Nootbaar went deep for the Cards in the victory, and Drew VerHagen picked up the win in relief; the Cards host the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight at Busch.
