Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is jumping into a case aimed at protecting benefits for military veterans.

Raoul is part of a group of 33 AGs arguing in support of an Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran from the state of Virginia.

He had served multiple tours of duty and sought to use GI Bill benefits to attend divinity school and then return to duty.

But the Department of Veterans Affairs denied his benefits. Raoul says the decision threatens educational opportunities for thousands of veterans, and argues the courts should take an “expansive” view of benefits for those who served.
