The next phase of Springfield’s rail consolidation effort is now underway.

Governor JB Pritzker visited Springfield Wednesday to mark the start of the underpass construction project that will close Jefferson and Madison between 9th and 11th for the next 14 months.

Pritzker noted that the existing grade level crossings created nuisance and danger for drivers, and says the temporary disruption of the closures will lead to much safer and smoother travel into and out of Springfield.

The $68 million underpass project is one of the final phases of rail consolidation, part of an overall $475 million effort that’s expected to wrap up in 2025.
