The director of Springfield’s public library is supporting legislation aimed at stopping any library districts around the state from banning certain books for partisan or ideological reasons.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias backs the bill, which would prevent state library grants from going to any library that bans books for such reasons.

Lincoln Library Director Summer Griffith says the library supports the rights of parents to make decisions on books for their children, but that one group of parents shouldn’t be able to prevent all children from seeing certain books.

That bill passed the Illinois House last month and is now pending in the Senate.
