We’re heading into the prime season for severe and threatening weather.

Not coincidentally, March is also Severe Weather Preparedness Month, and state officials say now is the time to develop a plan to prepare for, and cope with, storm damage. Illinois sees an average of 53 tornadoes per year, making it the fourth-most tornado-prone state in the nation.

Officials recommend you have an emergency kit ready, with non-perishable food, bottled water, flashlights and batteries, and more.

You should also keep important documents in a secure waterproof container, and make an inventory of possessions, using both lists and photos or video.
