A developer is seeking nearly $19 million in TIF district funds from the City of Springfield to renovate and rebrand the troubled Wyndham City Centre downtown.

An ordinance before the City Council seeks the funding for Tower Capitol Group to renovate the 30-story structure into a Delta Marriott hotel with 250 hotel rooms and 200 upscale apartments, with an observation deck featuring tourism displays and a food court.

The total cost of the renovation is estimated at more than $55 million.

The Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance says the TIF funding is needed because of the age of the hotel and the uncertainties in the hotel industry.
