The inspector general for the City of Springfield says there is no mechanism to punish an alderman for talking about City Council discussions that took place in the executive session.

Inspector General Roger Holmes says he was asked by several aldermen to investigate comments made in the press and during Council meetings characterizing the nature of discussions in a closed-door meeting in 2021, centering on the possibility of debt forgiveness for the Wyndham City Centre.

Holmes says city ordinance is “silent” on what to do if an alderman breaches the privacy of a closed session – and recommended that the City Council should adopt some more clear-cut rules to govern those situations.

It was the final report from Holmes as inspector general – he announced that he is retiring from the position, effective next week.
