The Illinois House has approved a modified bill that would ban the sale of assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines.

The bill passed the House shortly before 1am Friday after undergoing late changes, including increasing the limit on ammunition magazines to 12 rounds, up from the original 10… and removing a provision that would have raised the age for gun purchases from 18 to 21.

The bill’s fate in the state Senate is uncertain, but Senate leaders say they are committed to enacting “the most effective legislation possible.” The Senate will reconvene Sunday. Any final action would have to take place before Wednesday, when the new legislature is seated.
