Fentanyl continues to show up on the streets of Springfield and Sangamon County in drug seizures by local police.
Sangamon County reported seizing just over seven grams of pure fentanyl in 2022, up from a single seizure of four grams last year. Prior to that, the county did not have any record of seizures of pure fentanyl.
Springfield police say they primarily see the drug mixed in with other substances, mainly heroin. They report seizing 756 grams of heroin mixed with fentanyl this year. That’s up slightly from last year, but lower than the five-year high of 1,145 grams in 2018.
