After an election that saw Illinois Democrats hang onto, and even grow, their supermajority status in the state legislature, a top Republican lawmaker is giving up his leadership post.

House Minority Leader Jim Durkin says he will not seek another term as leader of the GOP caucus in the House. Durkin says it’s time for new leadership who can bring independents into the party to help bring about change in the state.

Durkin and House Republicans had hoped to pick up several contested seats, but may actually have a net loss of House seats by the time all the votes are tabulated.
