City Water Light and Power’s ash ponds have allowed elevated levels of dangerous substances… including arsenic… into groundwater, according to a new study by two environmental groups.

The study ranks nearly 300 coal ash sites around the country, placing the ponds used by CWLP’s retired Dallman units at Number 139 on the list. It finds arsenic present in the groundwater at 14 times safe levels, while boron was ten times higher than safe levels.

The study from the Environmental Integrity Project and Earthjustice contends that utilities around the country are ignoring coal ash contamination and failing to take steps to protect groundwater from contamination. CWLP is currently in the process of closing and sealing its coal ash ponds, amid an ongoing dispute with the U.S. EPA over the timeline for that work.
