Springfield firefighters continue to see a steady increase in calls for service.

In a presentation to the City Council Tuesday night, Fire Chief Brandon Blough said total calls for service are up more than 12-percent from 2018 to 2021, with structure fires up 14-percent and calls for emergency medical service climbing 13-percent.

Blough says the department continues talking with private ambulance companies on ways to more efficiently deal with calls for medical assistance while easing the burden on both the ambulance companies and the fire department. The department is also still working to update equipment and facilities, including work to build or modernize four firehouses in the months to come.
