Sangamon County deputies will be spending more time on the road in the coming year looking for speeders, impaired and distracted drivers, seat belt violations, and other safety offenses.

Sheriff Jack Campbell says the department has received a federal grant, administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, under the Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program, or STEP. The $10,400 grant will pay for extra patrols and enforcement details for a 12-month period that began on October 1st and runs through the end of September 2023.

Campbell says the goal is to make the roads safer for all by locating and stopping those who violate traffic safety laws.
