After being criticized for not offering specifics on how to address concerns about the upcoming end of cash bail in Illinois, Governor JB Pritzker now says a bill introduced by a Central Illinois lawmaker is a good place to start.

Pritzker was asked several times during last week’s governor’s race debate what specific changes he would support in the SAFE-T Act, but he did not offer any detailed proposals. But in follow-up questioning, Pritzker said Democratic state Senator Scott Bennett’s proposal is a “pretty good bill,” but says more work is needed to decide which parts of it should be enacted.

However, some criminal justice reform groups say Bennett’s bill continues some of the unfair practices of the current bail system.
