It could become the newest varsity sport in Illinois high schools. Girls’ flag football is gaining interest, especially in the Chicago area.

For it to become officially sanctioned as a varsity sport through the Illinois High School Association, at least 80 schools around the state would have to agree to take part. So far, there are around 50 schools with flag football teams.

But the Chicago Sun-Times reports one big challenge could be finding enough referees for the game, since even varsity boys tackle football is having trouble finding enough officials to cover every game.
