The Sangamon County state’s attorney has become the latest Illinois prosecutor to file a legal challenge to the new state law that will end cash bail on January 1st.

State’s Attorney Dan Wright has said that he agrees with the need to reform the bail system, so that someone isn’t kept behind bars only because of an inability to raise the money to post bond. But Wright says several provisions of the SAFE-T Act violate the Illinois Constitution.

Wright says the new law goes against the rules for bail set up in the state constitution, contradicts the constitutional rights of crime victims, and interferes with the independent authority of judges. Wright and Sheriff Jack Campbell are seeking an injunction preventing those provisions of the law from taking effect in their current form.
