An environmental study of the former Pillsbury Mills site is completed… and the property owners say the results are encouraging.

Chris Richmond of the group Moving Pillsbury Forward says the Phase Two environmental study does not indicate soil or well water contamination on the site. The survey found some asbestos contamination in some of the buildings on the site, as well as lead paint issues, but Richmond says those issues were already known. Richmond says now his group can begin applying for U.S. EPA grants to help cover the costs of remediation, and it’s also seeking up to $2 million in federal appropriations for the project.

But that’s still only a fraction of the estimated $10-12 million cost to clean up the site, demolish the remaining structures, and get it into shape for redevelopment.
