Governor JB Pritzker has signed a disaster declaration to mobilize state resources to assist hundreds of migrants who were bused to the Chicago area by the state of Texas.

Pritzker says the declaration will allow agencies like the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the state Department of Public Health to help address the needs of the migrants, many of whom traveled on foot from Venezuela to the U.S. border to seek asylum. 75 members of the Illinois National Guard have also been mobilized to assist with the relief efforts.

In making the announcement, Pritzker once again blasted Texas Governor Greg Abbott for sending the migrants to Chicago and other “sanctuary cities” without any advance notice or effort to coordinate a response.
