District 186 and the Springfield teachers’ union are headed to mediation in an effort to restart their stalled contract talks.

The district says it is starting the process of requesting a federal mediator who will try to help the two sides sort through their unresolved issues. Representatives from the district and the Springfield Education Association met Friday for the first time since the union rejected a tentative contract offer last month… but the talks quickly broke down. Now both sides say a mediator is the best way to get them back on track and seek a fast resolution of the contract dispute.

The two sides will review possible dates for talks with the mediator, but nothing has yet been scheduled.
