Hazardous Household Waste Collection Event On Hold

The annual household hazardous waste collection event planned for October in Springfield has been temporarily postponed… because the Ohio facility where those items had been taken for disposal has been disabled by a fire.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency says until that facility is operational again… or other arrangements can be made for disposal… the Springfield event and all others scheduled around the state are on hold. Each year the city sets up a location at the state fairgrounds to collect everything from old paint, motor oil, and insecticides to household batteries and expired medications.

The EPA says if another disposal site can be found, the collections could still be held this fall… otherwise, they’ll be pushed back to next spring.
