A Springfield-area solar farm project will play a major role in Chicago’s new commitment to operate city facilities with 100-percent clean, renewable energy by 2025.
As part of its effort to meet that goal, Chicago says it will purchase solar-generated electricity to help power its airports, the Harold Washington Library Center, and other city-run facilities. That power will come from the Double Black Diamond solar farm to be built on the Sangamon-Morgan county line.
County board chairman Andy Van Meter says the agreement will make Sangamon County a leading generator of clean solar power, and says the project will mean a big boost in construction and permanent jobs and a substantial increase in tax revenues.
