It’s been a week since a ticket sold in Northern Illinois matched all the winning numbers for a $1.3 billion Mega Millions prize… but no one has yet come forward to claim those winnings.

Illinois Lottery officials say that’s not really surprising, because of the life-altering ramifications of winning such an enormous amount of money. The lottery advises that whoever bought the winning ticket at a convenience store in Des Plaines should sign the back of the ticket and put it in a safe place… and get professional financial and legal advice. Even once the winner comes forward, we may never know their identity.

Under Illinois law, winners of lottery prizes worth $250,000 or more can choose to remain anonymous.
