Springfield aldermen have postponed a final vote on new ward maps, a decision that sparked some contentious debate at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The Council had been set to approve a map crafted by the Springfield-Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission, but Ward 9’s Jim Donelan moved to hold the ordinance for two more weeks to allow for amendments to be considered. Donelan says he’s satisfied with the original draft of the map, but understands other aldermen want some changes. Ward 3’s Roy Williams, Jr. complained about the last-minute delay, arguing that any changes should have been brought up before now, but aldermen still opted to wait on a final vote.

It’s unclear which ward boundaries might be impacted by any changes, but Donelan says there will be time for public review of any amendments before a final vote.
