Flags are flying at half-staff this weekend for two men who served their country in uniform… generations apart.

Governor JB Pritzker has ordered the honor through sunset Sunday for Hershel “Woody” Williams, who was the last surviving Congressional Medal of Honor recipient from World War II when he passed away this week. After his service, Williams formed a foundation that has created more than 100 Gold Star Families memorial monuments, including one planned for Springfield. Flags are also at half-staff for Marine Corporal Nathan Carlson of Illinois, who will be laid to rest Saturday after losing his life in a training accident in California.

He is survived by his wife, parents, and two sisters.
